I Chose Passion Over Fear

Why I Act The Way I Do

The historic Hollywood actors’ strike of 2023 impacted many Canadian performers, production series and film projects from coast to coast. From July 14 to November 9, 2023, the American actors' union SAG-AFTRA was on strike over a labour dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. It was definitely an uncertain period for all talent relying on the film industry, especially when union negotiations appeared to go from bad to worse.

Despite the four-month-long actors’ work stoppage, I remained loyal to my craft. I assessed a number of areas in my professional life that I wanted to improve. I took scene study classes and completed a slew of administrative tasks that begged for my completion. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was especially unique this year for many reasons. For one, the festival highlighted a very diverse selection of talent, producers, directors and movies. By far my favourite screening was the film Origin by Ava DuVernay. Have you seen it? If not, you should. No matter who you are, or where you’re from you will relate to this socio-historical biopic. For most of the year I kept busy attending fashion, lifestyle and industry events happening in Toronto. I made face to face connections with other creatives I wouldn’t have otherwise made.

This was also the first year that I was able to attend the week-long Fashion Week runway shows organized by FAT. I also attended several live theater performances which included _Wild Woman_ and _The Guide To Being Fabulous_. Check out some of the productions currently running at SoulPepper Theatre in Toronto which houses a range of plays created and presented by Canadian talent. In short 2023 turned out to be a busy, memorable and accomplished year for me. Strike or no strike, I had the best of time enjoying a VIP red carpet lifestyle!

It's 2024 and we're back on track! Now that the strike is behind us, I’m even more in love with the film and fashion. Most of 2023 may have been unsettling and uncertain but my mindset remained focused and determined. Passion over fear wins. Fear displaces focus. Fear stops goals and achievements permanently. Passion lives and builds. Passion is action. Passion creates icons!

I’m addicted to exploring different characters and their stories. I’m ready to meet, welcome and portray the new ones I haven’t met yet. This year, may they challenge my creative limits, help me connect with others and land me on a stage that calls me to fulfill a greater purpose.
